When to Retest Your 1RM Estimate (and How Often Beginners Should Adjust)

Here's what nobody told me when I started lifting at home with a dip bar in my room: the calculator number you write down on day one becomes a lie pretty fast.

Not because the calculator is wrong. Because you change. The first three months of training are a different game from every month after - your body adapts faster than your spreadsheet does, and if you don't retest, you end up training to your old self's strength while your real self has moved on.

Most articles dodge this. They give you a tidy rule ("retest every 4 to 6 weeks") and stop. Done.

That rule isn't wrong. It's just not the whole answer. Because some weeks you absolutely should retest, some weeks you absolutely shouldn't, and the calendar can't tell you which is which.

This post is the version I needed back when I was figuring this out alone, watching YouTube and trying not to look stupid. When to retest. When to wait. What to do with the new number. And - the part everyone skips - when not to retest, because a bad retest is worse than no retest at all.

To be clear: "retest" here means another submax set into the Strength Calculator. Not loading the heaviest weight you can move once. As a beginner, you don't need to do that. The estimate is enough.

What "retesting" actually means (the part that trips people up)

Quick alignment because the internet conflates two different things and it causes a lot of unnecessary anxiety.

  • True 1RM test: You load a bar with the heaviest weight you can move once, and you find out if you can. High effort. Real injury risk. Useful at certain stages. Not one of them is "first year of lifting."

  • e1RM retest: You do a normal set in your usual rep range - 6 to 10 reps, leaving 2 or 3 in the tank - and the formula estimates your max. Low effort, low risk, gets you 95% of the same useful information.

"How often" is the wrong question

The honest answer: it depends on what your training has been doing, not on what the calendar says.

A fixed schedule is a fine fallback when nothing else is happening. But there are three real triggers, and you should retest when any of them lights up:

  1. Your sets feel obviously easy. Your program calls for 8 reps at 145 lb and the last set still leaves you with 4 reps in the tank. Your e1RM is old.

  2. It's been 4 to 6 weeks and you haven't checked in. Beginners adapt fast - even without a clear trigger, something is probably different.

  3. You're starting a new training block. Optional, but useful if you're switching programs.

Two of those three are about your body, not your phone. The calendar is the dumbest version of the rule.

The trigger signs ("retest now")

These are the signals from inside your own training. Don't wait for a Sunday on the calendar to notice them - they're more honest than the date.

Your prescribed sets feel easy

If your program says "3 sets of 8 at 145 lb" and 145 feels like a warm-up - you're stronger than the e1RM that picked 145. Retest.

This is the most common reason beginners need to retest, and they almost always wait too long. "This is too easy" should make you suspicious, not pleased.

You're hitting the top of every rep range

Program calls for 6 to 10 reps and you're casually finishing 10 every time, with reps still in the tank? Your e1RM has been undershooting reality for a while. Retest, raise the load, drop the reps back to the bottom. (We get into the mechanics in the starting weights guide.)

Same weight, more reps than the calculator predicted

Plug last month's e1RM into the calculator and look at what it says about reps at the weight you've been training. If it predicted "8 reps" and you just did 11 - you're past it.

Your form looks better on video

This one's sneakier. Record yourself if you don't already. If your reps look more controlled than they did a month ago, the same numerical lift now represents more real work - less wasted motion, cleaner bar path, no shake at the top. Retest. You'll be surprised.

The calendar version, if you don't want to overthink it

If watching for triggers feels like too much to track, fair. Here's the simpler default - match it to where you are in your training journey.

  • First 3 to 6 months: Retest every 4 weeks. Beginners adapt fast. The e1RM goes stale before you know it.

  • After about 6 months: Retest every 6 to 8 weeks. Progress slows. Less point checking every month.

  • After a year of steady training: Retest every 8 to 12 weeks, or at the end of training blocks.

Pick one lift per body region - usually a chest lift, a back lift, a lower-body lift. You don't need to retest every exercise. The compound lifts move the slowest and tell you the most.

The "every 4-6 weeks" rule you'll see on every other site isn't wrong. It's just a starting point. The faster you're progressing, the sooner you'll outpace it. The slower you're progressing, the longer you can wait.

When NOT to retest (the part nobody covers)

A bad retest gives you a number you'll then use for weeks of training. It can make your sessions too hard (injury risk) or too easy (wasted weeks). Both directions are real. Both are avoidable.

Skip the retest if any of these are true today.

You're under-slept or stressed

Strength is mostly a nervous-system performance. A bad night's sleep can swing your e1RM by 5 to 10% in either direction. So can a stressful week. You're not measuring your strength on those days - you're measuring how you happen to feel.

You're sick or coming off a cold

Same reason. Wait a week of feeling normal, then retest.

You just had a hard training week

Fatigue from accumulated training compresses your apparent strength. Two to four easy days, then retest.

You're returning from a break of two weeks or more

Your nervous system is rusty. Your form is rusty. Run a couple of normal sessions first to shake the dust off. Otherwise the e1RM you get is measuring your re-entry, not your actual strength.

You're on a new exercise

Don't call it a "retest." Call it a new baseline. A switch from machine chest press to dumbbell bench is a different movement, not a different attempt at the same one. The numbers won't be comparable.

You feel weaker than usual today

Doesn't matter why. Don't retest into a bad day. Repeat last week's session, lighter if you need to, and move on. The retest can wait. It always can.

You're sick, severely under-slept, or stressed

Skip it. It'll come around again.

e1RM tests measure your nervous system as much as your muscles. Both are downstream of recovery.

You just finished a heavy training week

Wait 2 to 4 days, then retest.

Fatigued retests underestimate your real strength by 5 to 10%. That number then makes your future sessions too easy.

You're switching to a different lift (e.g. push-ups to bench press)

Treat it as a brand new estimate, not a retest.

A new exercise has its own learning curve. The numbers won't be comparable.


If you're going to break one of these rules, break the "wait" ones, not the "retest" ones. Retesting too often is annoying. Adjusting your training to a noisy retest can leave you grinding bad weights for weeks.

What to do with the new number

This is where most articles wave a hand and bail. The new e1RM is useless on its own. It only matters if you change something about your training because of it.

The change is your working weights. The loads you've been using for your prescribed sets.

Step 1 - Compare old and new e1RM

If your number went up, use the table below to decide how much to adjust. If it went down or stayed flat, don't adjust - repeat your current weights and check again next week.

Example (starting from a 200 lb bench e1RM)

Under 5 lb (about 2–3%)

Nothing yet. Keep current weights, hit a few cleaner sessions, retest in 2 weeks.

New e1RM: 203 lb. Stay with the current load. Probably noise.

5 to 10 lb (about 3–5%)

Add the smallest jump available - 2.5 lb on each side of the bar, or one pin up on a stack.

New e1RM: 210 lb. Bench at 145 lb? Try 150 next session.

10 to 20 lb (about 5–10%)

Bump 5 lb on most lifts, 10 lb on lower-body lifts. Recalculate your percentages from the new e1RM.

New e1RM: 220 lb. Bench at 145 lb (about 72%)? 72% of 220 is roughly 158 lb. Try 155 to 160 next.

More than 20 lb in 6 weeks

Be skeptical. Retest with the same rep range you used last time before changing anything.

That kind of jump in a beginner is possible. It's also a signal that one of the two numbers (old or new) is off. Verify before adjusting.

Step 2 - Recalculate the percentages you actually use

If your program prescribes 70% of e1RM for sets of 8, just do the math with the new number. 70% of 220 lb is 154 lb. Round to the nearest 5 lb you can actually load. You don't need a spreadsheet - the phone calculator works fine.

Step 3 - Reset the rep ladder

If you'd been hitting 8 reps with reps to spare at the old weight, drop back to 6 at the new weight. Climb the rep ladder again over the next 2 to 4 sessions.

This is the part where people stumble. They retest, find a higher e1RM, jump the weight, and refuse to drop the reps back down. Don't do that. You're trying to add load, not chase a rep PR at the new weight on day one.

Common mistakes

Using a different rep range than last time

If you tested with 8 reps last month and you're testing with 5 reps now, you're using the formula in different places along its accuracy curve. The two numbers aren't directly comparable. Same rep range, every time.

Switching formulas mid-stream

Epley and Brzycki disagree by a few pounds. If you used Epley last month and Brzycki this month, the change in your e1RM might be the formula, not you - more on why they differ here. Pick one calculator. Stick with it.

Retesting right after a deload

Some programs include a planned deload week - lighter training to let your body recover. The retest you do at the end of a deload often comes back lower than the one before it. This isn't because you got weaker. It's because the formula assumes you're fully primed. Retest after one normal training week back.

Trusting one retest more than a trend

Your e1RM is going to bounce around session to session, especially in the first six months when you're still learning the movements. Three retests over six weeks is a story. One retest is a data point. Don't redesign your program around one number.

Letting the calculator override how the lift felt

If the e1RM says you can handle 80 kg and 80 kg feels like 95 kg in your hands today, trust your hands. The math doesn't know about your wrists. The math doesn't know about your sleep. Drop 5 to 10%, finish your session, and move on.

How to run the retest

Keep retests as identical as you can. The whole point is that the comparison is fair.

  • Same lift. Machine chest press and barbell bench are different lifts.

  • Same warm-up. Two or three light sets, the way you do them on regular training days.

  • Same rep range. If you tested at 8 reps, retest at 8.

  • Same stop point. Form starts to drift, about 2 reps in the tank. Same standard every time.

  • Same time of day, if you can. Strength varies a few percent across the day. Match it if possible; if you can't, just know it adds noise.

FAQs

How often should beginners retest their 1RM?

Every 4 weeks for the first three to six months of consistent training. Every 6 to 8 weeks after that. The faster you're progressing, the more often the retest is worth doing.

Should I retest after every workout that feels strong?

No. One good session is noise. Wait until you've hit the top of your rep range with reps to spare two sessions in a row before treating it as a real signal.

How long after starting to lift should I do my first e1RM estimate?

After 2 to 3 weeks of practicing the movement. Long enough to know what good form looks like for you; soon enough to give you a baseline to compare against.

Can I retest if I'm sore from yesterday's workout?

You can, but the number will under-represent your real strength. Wait two clean days if you have the patience. If you don't, retest with the awareness that the number is conservative.

Do I need to retest before changing my program?

Helpful, not required. A new program will prescribe percentages of your 1RM, and the closer that number is to reality, the better the program will fit. A retest before starting a new block is one of the most useful checkpoints there is.

What if my e1RM goes down?

First check whether anything outside the gym would explain it - sleep, illness, stress, a new job, an off week. If you've had a clean week and the number still dropped, repeat the test in 3 to 4 days. If it goes down again, your training might need more recovery. Drop your working weights 10% for a week, then re-check.

Should I retest all my lifts at the same time?

You can, but you don't have to. One lift per major movement pattern (push, pull, lower body) is enough. Beginners often spread retests across a week so no single session is too taxing.

Is it bad to retest more often than 4 weeks?

More annoying than bad. The math is noisy at short intervals - you'll see numbers bounce up and down without real underlying change. Two retests within a week, in particular, mostly just measure recovery.

Should I retest after losing or gaining weight?

Yes, especially if the change was meaningful (5+ pounds). Your absolute lift might be the same, but your strength relative to bodyweight has shifted. The retest tells you that.

What's the difference between retesting and just adding 5 lb?

Adding 5 lb is the small move you make between retests, based on how the sessions are going. The retest is the bigger checkpoint that tells you whether your overall training percentages are still in the right zone. Both matter. Use the small adjustments more often, the retest less often.

Can I trust the same number from two different 1RM calculators?

Approximately. Different formulas give slightly different numbers - usually within 5 to 10 lb. Pick one calculator and use it consistently. We compared Epley and Brzycki specifically here.

Do I need a deload before retesting?

Not for a submax e1RM. That advice applies to true 1RM testing, where peak readiness matters. For an estimate from a 6 to 10 rep set, just don't retest in a state of obvious fatigue. A normal training week is fine.

  • Retest when a trigger happens (rep ranges feel easy) or every 4 to 6 weeks as a default.
